The Bowel Research UK Microbiome Garden draws inspiration from medical and botanical research, exploring the fascinating connection between a healthy landscape and soil, a healthy gut, and a healthy mind. It aims to inspire people to rewild their diets, gardens and their relationship with the land.
The garden, which is in the ‘All About Plants’ category, is sponsored by Project Giving Back.
Created by talented young garden designers and RHS Chelsea debutants Sid Hill and Chris Hull, The Bowel Research UK Microbiome Garden is an edible meadow focussing on the connection between the ecological health of the landscape, it’s soil and the health of our own gut microbiome.
The gut microbiome is an exciting, emerging area of science. We know the vast ecosystem of bacteria, fungi and viruses in our gut affects our wider health and susceptibility to all sorts of disease – but researchers have only just begun to scratch the surface of how to harness its life-changing and even life-saving potential.

Is the soil is trying to tell us something?
Each whisper unveils the hidden world of soil ecology, offering insights into ecosystem health. Active, healthy soil full of microbes and bugs is humming with life, supporting the plants that we eat. These plants feed our own gut microbiome, creating an essential link between our guts and the soil our food is grown in. Watch our film to learn more about this hidden world, and how we are inextricably linked to the world around us.

Plant your own microbiome garden
The planting includes Bistorta, Camassia and Lupin luteus, creating a rich tapestry of yellows, blues and pinks. These plants are commonly grown in gardens across the UK, but few people know that they are great food crops too and could offer a myriad of gut health and microbiome benefits.

Learn more about our microbiome appeal
Scientists, doctors are at the beginning of their understanding of the human gut microbiome and it will only be through high quality research that they will begin to realise the huge potential of understanding the gut microbiome’s relationship to human health.
Bowel Research UK is announcing a bespoke grants round. The charity is wanting to raise £250,000 to invest in world-class innovative research into the gut microbiome, during 2024 / 2025. This equates to 1 PhD and 3 small proof of principle grants but the more funds we can raise, the more research we will be able to fund in this important area.
